Even with the arrival of David Villa and the ripening of Pedro and Bojan, it would be premature for Barcelona to sell Ibrahimovic this summer. Another treble push will require a strong stable of strikers and considering that Barça fields them three at a time, Guardiola will need at least two capable back-ups with starter potential.

All signs point to Thierry Henry’s departure, meaning Pep is left with Messi, Villa, Ibra, Pedro, Bojan and Jeffren to chose from. Quickly, choose the best five. Go ahead, I’ll wait…

Jeffren is sixth on that list, no? The Venezuelan has shown that the conveyor belt of talent between La Masia and the Camp Nou is well oiled and running strong; but coming off a season in which he scored his first two professional goals, the 22 year-old may not be ready to fill in full time yet.

Considering that Messi and Villa’s summer will be consumed by that pesky World Cup, concerns over fatigue and injury are very real and Guardiola will need ample coverage. Ibrahimovic, Pedro and Bojan have proven they can start on a championship team. Jeffren has not.

What makes Barça-Madrid different? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andres Cordero

Throughout my tenure with Gol TV, no rivalry has captured a broader audience than Barcelona versus Real Madrid. Sure, La Liga is the station's marquee championship at the moment and those are Spain's two giants, but Gol TV has had broadcasting rights to Serie A, Bundesliga, Brasileirao, Copa del Rey, Copa Italia, Uefa Cup/Europa League, an array World Cup qualifiers and more. And yet nothing – no combination of Inter, Juve and Milan; or England's big four; or even Argentina vs. Brazil – has been a bigger draw for the channel than when the arch-rivals from Catalonia and Castile square off.

Madrid's Real-ity Bites PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andres Cordero

Each Real Madrid player had just received a brand new Audi of their choice. The German auto maker shelled out Q7s, R8s, RS6s and S5s like candy corn on Halloween night. Even third-choice keeper Antonio Adan (yet to play a single minute for the team) came away with a sweet 2010 A5 convertible. It’s the kind of ride that most, if not all, of the blue-collar players on third-division side Alcorcon could only dream of owning… someday… maybe.

Madrid 4 - Alcorcon 0

Among the men that humbled the World’s richest squad in a round of 32 Copa del Rey clash on Tuesday were a mechanic and a chauffeur. Men whose day jobs require them to fix and drive cars far less luxurious than Raul’s new Q7.

Sans Messi, Ribery & Ronaldo PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andres Cordero

It’s virtually inconceivable that the 2010 World Cup will take place without Lionel Messi, Franck Ribery or Cristiano Ronaldo. Few, if any, players can match their individual brilliance and I would argue none are as enjoyable to watch. But if the World Cup were next week and not nine months from now, Messi and Ribery would have to play their way in through difficult two-legged play-off matches, while Ronaldo would be vacationing in Ibiza.

Ibracadabra and Eto'o disappears. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andres Cordero

It's the magic trick of the summer. With the right hand, Barcelona shows off David Villa. Anticipation mounts as the champions chase the summer's most coveted center-forward. The audience's eyes are fixed on the shiny Euro '08 Golden Boot. What they don't see is what's neatly tucked away under the left sleeve. Meanwhile, what to do about Samuel Eto'o? The Indomitable Lion is deemed surplus to requirements, but he is in no hurry to resolve his situation. Eto'o's future is center stage, right alongside Villa. Eto'o provides the drama. Villa, the suspense.
